There was a time when I thought I had finally found the perfect cookware. It was beautiful. It wasn't cheap. Food slid right out of the pan, cleanup was easy, and I honestly thought I was set for years. Then, little by little, everything changed. The pans started sticking. At first it was just eggs, then grilled cheese. Before long, foods that had always cooked beautifully suddenly seemed glued to the surface. I found myself adding more oil, turning the heat down, trying every trick I could think of. Nothing worked. The nonstick coating had simply reached the end of its life. That sent me back to the drawing board. I started asking myself a simple question: What did my mother and grandmother cook with before nonstick cookware ever existed? The answer was stainless steel. Not because it was trendy, and not because it was advertised as the latest innovation, but because it worked. Those pans lasted for decades. They didn't need replacing every few years. They didn't have a coating that eventually wore away. They simply became trusted kitchen tools that families cooked with day after day. Of course, cookware has improved over the years. Today's stainless steel pans have better construction, more comfortable handles, and more even heating than many of the pans our grandmothers used. So I decided to make the switch. For me, it wasn't about chasing another cookware trend. It was about buying something built to last. It was about learning, or maybe relearning, the cooking techniques people used successfully for generations before nonstick cookware became common. And yes, it was also influenced by something else. As I've worked to make healthier choices in my own life, I've found myself paying closer attention to the products I bring into my kitchen. Reading about ongoing research and discussions surrounding some nonstick coatings made me stop and think about what I wanted to cook with every day. Everyone has to make their own decisions, and I'm not here to tell anyone what they should buy. This was simply the choice that felt right for me. If you've followed Wise Owl Living for very long, you already know I'm not chasing perfection. I'm chasing progress: one better decision, one better habit, one recipe, one project, one day at a time. At some point, I'll share more about my own health journey and the experiences that have shaped many of the decisions I make today. For now, just know that this change is part of that journey. The funny thing is, going back to stainless steel has reminded me that sometimes the old ways still work remarkably well. In fact, they often work better than we remember. Over the next several weeks, I'm going to share everything I've learned about cooking with stainless steel. We'll talk about why food sticks, how to prevent it, what pans are actually worth buying, and why you don't need an entire matching cookware set to build a kitchen you'll love. If you've ever been frustrated by stainless steel, or if you've assumed food will always stick, I hope you'll join me. I was surprised by how much there was to learn, and even more surprised by how much I now enjoy cooking with it.
